Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.11%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Telecoms , Consumer Staples and Energy sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.11%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ), which rose 4.14% or 0.07 points to trade at 1.76 at the close. Meanwhile, BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ) added 3.64% or 0.16 points to end at 4.56 and TransAlta Corp (TSX: TA ) was up 3.53% or 0.70 points to 20.55 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Air Canada (TSX: AC ), which fell 9.35% or 2.33 points to trade at 22.59 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TSX: BBDb ) declined 5.04% or 5.21 points to end at 98.15 and Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX: EFR ) was down 4.34% or 0.36 points to 7.94.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 620 to 333 and 79 ended unchanged.

Shares in TransAlta Corp (TSX: TA ) rose to 5-year highs; up 3.53% or 0.70 to 20.55.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.26% to 8.82.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.32% or 8.56 to $2,661.44 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.16% or 0.82 to hit $69.89 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.72% or 0.53 to trade at $73.38 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.48% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.27% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.11% at 106.68.
