Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology , Utilities and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.44% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.78%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Travelers Companies (NYSE: TRV ), which rose 2.39% or 5.94 points to trade at 254.79 at the close. Meanwhile, 3M Company (NYSE: MMM ) added 2.10% or 3.09 points to end at 150.52 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD ) was up 1.87% or 5.68 points to 309.95 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA ), which fell 8.48% or 11.13 points to trade at 120.15 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE: CRM ) declined 4.04% or 12.43 points to end at 294.90 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN ) was down 2.62% or 5.61 points to 208.74.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Invitation Homes Inc (NYSE: INVH ) which rose 5.54% to 33.32, Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ: WBD ) which was up 4.76% to settle at 11.00 and Allstate Corp (NYSE: ALL ) which gained 3.52% to close at 195.06.

The worst performers were Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX ) which was down 21.69% to 139.11 in late trade, Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ: SMCI ) which lost 15.97% to settle at 42.95 and Viatris Inc (NASDAQ: VTRS ) which was down 15.21% to 9.53 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were PepGen Ltd (NASDAQ: PEPG ) which rose 58.82% to 2.43, Binah Capital Group Inc (NASDAQ: BCG ) which was up 53.48% to settle at 2.87 and Urgent.ly Inc (NASDAQ: ULY ) which gained 47.18% to close at 0.67.

The worst performers were Sunation Energy Inc (NASDAQ: SUNE ) which was down 63.26% to 0.42 in late trade, Sacks Parente Golf Inc (NASDAQ: SPGC ) which lost 44.54% to settle at 0.41 and Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ: DMRC ) which was down 43.08% to 15.39 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1914 to 860 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2375 fell and 921 advanced, while 121 ended unchanged.

Shares in Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX ) fell to 5-year lows; losing 21.69% or 38.52 to 139.11. Shares in Viatris Inc (NASDAQ: VTRS ) fell to 52-week lows; falling 15.21% or 1.71 to 9.53. Shares in Sunation Energy Inc (NASDAQ: SUNE ) fell to all time lows; losing 63.26% or 0.73 to 0.42. Shares in Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ: DMRC ) fell to 52-week lows; falling 43.08% or 11.65 to 15.39.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.63% to 21.13 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.47% or 43.04 to $2,887.56 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.17% or 1.49 to hit $70.11 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.75% or 1.26 to trade at $73.33 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.80% to 1.04, while USD/JPY rose 0.52% to 149.78.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.83% at 107.21.
