Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 4.69%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy , Materials and Financials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 4.69% to hit a new 6-months low.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were TFI International Inc (TSX: TFII ), which rose 5.84% or 6.24 points to trade at 113.02 at the close. Meanwhile, Jamieson Wellness Inc (TSX: JWEL ) added 2.50% or 0.75 points to end at 30.80 and Aritzia Inc (TSX: ATZ ) was up 1.66% or 0.69 points to 42.19 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ), which fell 17.14% or 0.48 points to trade at 2.32 at the close. Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX: SES ) declined 15.64% or 2.41 points to end at 13.00 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ) was down 15.55% or 1.60 points to 8.69.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 956 to 48 and 45 ended unchanged.

Shares in Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ) fell to 3-years lows; falling 17.14% or 0.48 to 2.32. Shares in Vermilion Energy Inc. (TSX: VET ) fell to 3-years lows; falling 15.55% or 1.60 to 8.69.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 9.20% to 18.39 a new 6-months high.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 2.03% or 63.39 to $3,058.31 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 6.60% or 4.42 to hit $62.53 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 5.72% or 4.01 to trade at $66.13 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 1.07% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.05% to 0.64.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.04% at 102.86.
