Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.44%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Consumer Staples , Telecoms and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.44% to hit a new 6-months low.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: IVN ), which rose 8.57% or 0.88 points to trade at 11.15 at the close. Meanwhile, Celestica Inc. (TSX: CLS ) added 6.48% or 6.10 points to end at 100.18 and Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX: EDR ) was up 4.93% or 0.22 points to 4.68 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Ngex Minerals Ltd (TSX: NGEX ), which fell 8.24% or 0.99 points to trade at 11.03 at the close. TMX Group Limited (TSX: X ) declined 5.85% or 3.01 points to end at 48.40 and ATS Corporation (TSX: ATS ) was down 5.23% or 1.75 points to 31.70.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 809 to 176 and 40 ended unchanged.

Shares in ATS Corporation (TSX: ATS ) fell to 52-week lows; losing 5.23% or 1.75 to 31.70.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 34.37% to 24.71 a new 52-week high.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.13% or 34.35 to $3,001.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 1.55% or 0.96 to hit $61.03 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 1.69% or 1.11 to trade at $64.47 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.17% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.27% to 0.64.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.46% at 103.24.
