Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare , Industrials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.39%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.05%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA ), which rose 1.35% or 1.49 points to trade at 112.20 at the close. Meanwhile, American Express Company (NYSE: AXP ) added 0.97% or 2.48 points to end at 257.86 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS ) was up 0.78% or 3.91 points to 507.89 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE: BA ), which fell 2.37% or 3.78 points to trade at 155.50 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT ) declined 1.57% or 4.69 points to end at 293.43 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN ) was down 1.41% or 2.56 points to 179.56.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: PLTR ) which rose 6.23% to 98.39, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE: HPE ) which was up 5.08% to settle at 15.01 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX ) which gained 4.83% to close at 976.28.

The worst performers were Albemarle Corp (NYSE: ALB ) which was down 5.89% to 54.01 in late trade, Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc (NYSE: ZBH ) which lost 4.62% to settle at 97.26 and Dow Inc (NYSE: DOW ) which was down 4.10% to 27.70 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Starbox Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: STBX ) which rose 1,162.62% to 1.80, Ostin Technology Group Co Ltd (NASDAQ: OST ) which was up 299.10% to settle at 3.19 and Mural Oncology PLC (NASDAQ: MURA ) which gained 133.98% to close at 2.41.

The worst performers were Spruce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ: SPRB ) which was down 58.02% to 0.13 in late trade, MetaVia Inc (NASDAQ: MTVA ) which lost 55.98% to settle at 0.81 and Applied Digital Corp (NASDAQ: APLD ) which was down 35.94% to 3.44 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1421 to 1343 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1766 rose and 1539 declined, while 121 ended unchanged.

Shares in Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc (NYSE: ZBH ) fell to 5-year lows; losing 4.62% or 4.71 to 97.26. Shares in Starbox Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: STBX ) rose to all time lows; up 1,162.62% or 1.66 to 1.80. Shares in Spruce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ: SPRB ) fell to all time lows; losing 58.02% or 0.18 to 0.13. Shares in MetaVia Inc (NASDAQ: MTVA ) fell to all time lows; losing 55.98% or 1.03 to 0.81.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.53% to 30.11.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.64% or 20.72 to $3,247.02 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $61.52 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $64.85 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.57% to 1.13, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 143.17.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.48% at 99.87.
